Gathering in July

July, one of my least favorite months, has seemed to fly by this year.  I think I've been saying that about most months lately.  Seems to be a trend for people as they get older, to make statements like that.  But the end of July snuck up on me with nary a thought of Cheryl's Gathering so I am throwing this post together at the last minute.  I know Cheryl will forgive the slap-dash efforts because she knows that it is no reflection on how I feel about this monthly post.  She's a gracious host with a generous heart.

Usually the summer months run together as one hot and sticky blob, but our July has been quite mild in comparison to summers past.  I typically avoid the out-of-doors in summer but when your husband decides that this is the year for a garden you sorta hafta go outside.  And then when a friend says "let's swim laps in my pool for exercise" you sorta hafta go outside.  And if you sorta hafta you might as well go all in.  It is only for a season, after all!

So gardening and swimming got me out of the house to do things that are a-typical for me.  Not grand or unusual, but different.  For me.  And that is my goal... to find contentment and joy in everyday living.  Which is more of a struggle than you might assume.

Let's get going with some pictures, shall we?  Don't worry.  It is highly, HIGHLY unlikely that you will ever see a picture of me in a swimsuit.  My muscles may be toned, but they are way down deep and that's just not something that needs to be witnessed by the masses!

Here is a picture taken from our deck of our garden area.  The plan is to do this thing little by little.  Even with that in mind, we did more than we had originally intended.  Just to give you some sort of scale, the grape arbor is about 7 feet tall and each section of fence is about 8 feet long.

A bit of a closer look...

Our zucchini and yellow squash were much more prolific than we'd anticipated but we aren't complaining!  I think one of my favorite parts of gardening is having stuff to share!  We've given and we've received.

Our compost pile has even become a source of enjoyment.  A Seminole squash has volunteered to grow here (bringing their total number of plants to 3) along with some other squash-vine thing that isn't producing any fruit.  They do such a good job of making an eyesore less offensive.

Our neighbors have even gotten into the act.  Their children bring compostables over just about every day.  I have a separate bin for eggshells sitting on the deck. Their youngest just can't wait to be big enough to climb the steps all by himself to bring us eggshells.  So cute!   They had a city relative visiting a couple weeks ago who wanted to know absolutely everything that we were doing in the garden.  I guess even when you are a novice and know so very little about what you are doing, there is always someone who can be inspired by it.

I bought 20 pounds of green beans from a local natural farm and processed them for the freezer.  I don't have the equipment needed for canning {did my Yoder family just gasp?} but my seal-a-meal thingy came in handy for this project.

A few little garden critters...
We took the twins swimming at the neighbor's pool.  Levi didn't hesitate for a second.  Liam was a bit more skeptical.  Here they are waving at each other...
I've been eating a lot of overnight oats this summer.  Stir uncooked rolled oats into yogurt, add some almond butter and other healthy ingredients (I came up with a pretty decent carrot cake-inspired version), cover and refrigerate overnight, throw some fresh fruit on in the morning.  I love this stuff!

You may be wondering why I am using a meat thermometer to pit cherries.  Because I couldn't find my chopsticks!  Duh!  Seriously though, several tutorials on Youtube suggested using chopsticks to push the pits into a bottle.  I really couldn't find my chopsticks so I improvised with a meat thermometer.  It didn't work as quickly as I had anticipated.  The search continues...

Have you done anything this month that may not be unusual, but unusual for YOU?

Gathering in May

I can hardly believe that May has come to a close.  The beginning of the month flew by as we were anticipating a trip to Arkansas for Amelia's graduation from college.  The trip itself took us through the middle of the month, and the remainder has been a little fuzzy.  I always have a time of let-down after a vacation/big event during which things are disjointed.  Stewart and I also started another cycle of Whole30 immediately upon arriving home from our trip, so I've been throwing most of my energies into keeping things interesting in the kitchen.

Thanks to Cheryl at Thinking About Home for hosting this link-up to help me think ahead AND reflect on the moments that might otherwise be forgotten.

Making clarified butter with my aunt.  Good stuff!

Finally got our wind chime hung outside.

Babysitting for the grands while Mommy is at school and Daddy is at work.

Thinking of friends while I'm pulling weeds in the flower bed.

Wondering if I would get to see my peonies bloom since they were just about to as we were leaving for vacation.

Putting my mad drawing skills to good use to keep the twins amused on our long car ride.  You can read all about that HERE.

They waited to bloom so that I could see them in their full glory!

Attempting to root a new African violet after the plant got some sort of nasty infestation.

The one and only strawberry we got from our garden.  Hubby and I shared it.  It was so sweet that it left us hoping for a bumper crop next year!

Well, that's about it, friends.  I'm ready for June now.  And now for a shameless plug...
Join me on the first Monday of each month for MAKE IT NEW MONDAY when I host a linky party.  What's that about?  Find out HERE!  Search my blog for other Make It New Monday posts.  Hope to see you back here on Monday, June 2, 2014 for a solution for limited storage space in the bathroom!

Gathering in April

This month's gathering in which I join Cheryl at Thinking About Home for her monthly link up is slightly different than previous months.  Although this doesn't strictly follow the "rules" that she outlined, I think I know Cheryl well enough to know that she won't mind... just this once.

April has been a month of moments holding great joy for me.  I don't use the word joy lightly since it is not only a word that Scripture attaches holy meaning to, but it was also my mother's name.  So I say JOY with its fullest span of meaning.

So many moments that string together to make a season...

** that moment when I took off a pair of jeans, knowing I'd never wear them again because they are way too big.

**that moment when I whispered "Help me" to a friend and she immediately covered me with prayer and spoke live-giving words.

**that moment when that same friend called and said "We are moving.  In three days," and my ability to rejoice for their opportunity overshadowed the sorrow I felt at our separation.

**that moment when I stood atop a massive pile of composted horse manure and laughed out loud at this unexpected development in my life.

**that moment when my 2-year-old twin grandsons locked their arms around my neck, not wanting me to leave, and saying "Mommaw" over and over.

**that moment when I was about to take a deep drink from that pit called Anxiety and a notecard arrived in the mail with knowing, meaningful words of encouragement written inside.

**that moment when my husband gave me a look that means the same thing it has always meant but seeing nearly 26 years of depth supporting it.

**that moment when a friend and I shared an afternoon of laughter over a couple cups of tea out on her patio in the spring sunshine.

**that moment when a bad situation took a turn for the worse and a sense of peace flooded into my mind as a balm for the stinging.

**that moment when  a root of bitterness released its grip on my heart and I felt the full impact of love flow into that space.

**that moment when an old fear turned into a new confidence.

**that moment when I leaned into the discomfort of true vulnerability that forged a stronger bond with both old and new friends.

**that moment when I realized that I am developing a trust response toward God in stressful seasons.

**that moment when the scent of lilacs reminded me to appreciate the simple things.

All I can say now is... May has some big shoes to fill.

Gathering In February

This month's Gathering, hosted by Cheryl at THINKING ABOUT HOME(link to her blog below), is a bit different than last month's since almost all of the pictures I took this month were to fulfill a Photo-a-day Challenge hosted by Kati (link to her blog below).  I do believe that between the two of them, Cheryl and Kati are determined to make us all into photographers.  And I am thankful to them!  Below you will find thumbnail photos of each week's photos with a link to those posts.

Gathering in January

I was so glad when Cheryl decided to host this Gathering of Moments because I was looking for a way to use pictures from my 2014 calendar for my blog.  I've also been in a writing slump lately and this is the perfect way for me to keep me connected until this... season... is over.

I could have chosen a theme of "cold" or "snow" for this month because the weather has been, well, cold and snowy.  But, for me, this month has been all about food.

On January 2nd my husband and I started a food plan called Whole30 and I have had to learn a whole new way of cooking.  I've really enjoyed it but boy, oh boy, did I spend a lot of time in the kitchen at first.  I was creating recipes left and right!  And I learned to make my own mayonnaise, too!    Here are just a few pictures from this month's menu...  rutabaga fries with (homemade!) mayonnaise, zusketti (spiralized zucchini) with meatballs, and a hearty breakfast of eggs, (homemade!) sausage patties, roasted sweet potatoes, and sweet cherries.  Yum!

Due to several peoples' interest in the spiral zucchini, I've decided to post a link to the one that I purchased.  It isn't an endorsement for the brand since I've not compared it with other brands, just simply "this is the one I have."  http://www.amazon.com/Paderno-World-Cuisine-A4982799-Tri-Blade/dp/B0007Y9WHQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391200314&sr=8-1&keywords=spiralizer
