Make It New Monday 05/05/14... Spruced Up Mirror

It's that time again!  Yup!  Make It New Monday.  I don't have many months left of projects already done so this series may end at any moment.  So if this is something you've thought about joining in with, you'd better do it quick!   Just about any project will do as long as it starts out like "this" and ends up like "that".  Refashion a t-shirt into a headband?  Link up!  Re-work a recipe to better meet your family's dietary needs?  Link up!  Turn a closet into a reading nook (or vice versa)?  Link up!  Make wall art out of drinking straws?  Link up!

This month's project started out as someone elses' Make It New project that I picked up at a thrift store.  They had taken a mirror and turned it into a planter for an artificial flower arrangement.  The pictures don't do their "after" justice, and it wasn't hideous.  It just wasn't what I wanted!

I disassembled the whole thing...

Maggie, my 15 year old Chihuahua, supervised...

I tried several methods to clean the paint off of the metalwork...
(brute force won out)

A couple coats of white spray paint (using push pins to keep the frame from sticking to the cardboard while it dried) and some judicious sanding...

Check out the paint booth Hubby made for me...

Put the parts I liked back together and voila!

Okay, now it is your turn to show us what you've been up to...

  1. Joanne, I LOVE this make-it-new!! You (and Maggie...and your brute force ;)) did a great job...it's lovely!

I have a project that I want to link up. We just finished it yesterday, in fact. But my painting supervisor is waiting on his crew (that would be me), so I hope to pop up here sometime this week.

Oh, I also love your paint booth. It looks so "Stewart" to me. He is such a thoughtful hubby!

    1. Thank you, Cheryl. The mirror is now hanging in our guest bedroom. I just couldn't get a very good picture of it in there. Poor lighting.

The good thing about having a Chihuahua as supervisor... I can lock her in her crate if she gets too demanding. Yours... well, he might not be so easily managed!

And you are so right. That paint booth screams "STEWART MADE ME!" haha I love that man!

  2. I love your new mirror. It's such a beautiful shape and looks so much better with a fresh coat of white paint.

  3. I'd love to add a project, but I don't think adding sand to the kids sandbox would quite count as a make it new :)

    1. Probably not, but when you decide to turn that sandbox into a table or a lampshade... :)

  7. What a lovely piece you created. It looks very abbey-like. I don't have a blog, but my husband and I love to repurpose things around here. So far this spring we have made stepping stones from bricks we have had forever, and used up boards from a fence that was knocked down by a tree, for above ground garden boxes. Hope you have a great weekend. ♥
